Two Numbers, Both of Which Matter

A double carrier rated at 600 lbs does not mean any two bikes totalling 600 lbs will do. The 400 lb per-bike ceiling is the second constraint, and it is the one people miss.

Two 300 lb bikes are fine — 600 lbs total, both under 400. A 450 lb bike and a 150 lb bike total the same 600 but break the per-bike limit and are not a valid load.

Publishing both figures is the honest way to state it, and it is what lets you check your own two machines against the carrier before ordering.

Tongue Weight Is the Real Limit

Six hundred pounds hanging behind the bumper applies far more leverage to a receiver than 600 lbs sitting on a tow ball. That is why this carrier calls for a Class III or IV hitch in the 2 inch size.

Check the vehicle’s tongue weight rating as well as the hitch class — the carrier can be within spec while the vehicle is not, particularly on smaller SUVs.
